A Female Footprint in Wartime Photojournalism

Overshadowed often by her lover and partner, famed war photographer Robert Capa, and posthumously tainted by Communist modifiers, photographer Gerda Taro had a brief, yet influential career. Taro's front-line photographs of the Spanish Civil War and her subsequent death in battle at age 26, are credited as the first by a female war photojournalist. Her sympathetic and poignant pictures offer a rare and striking view of the Spanish Republic Loyalists.

The first major exhibition of Taro's work opens Wednesday at the International Center for Photography in New York, in conjunction with three other shows at the center related to the Spanish Civil War.
